Why unit systems exist
A unit is an agreed standard used to describe a quantity. A measurement combines a number with that standard: 3 meters, 12 inches, or 20 degrees Celsius. Shared units let measurements be repeated, compared, and communicated.
Measurement systems developed independently across regions and trades. Modern conversion connects these conventions without changing the physical quantity being described.
International System of Units
The International System of Units, abbreviated SI, is the modern metric system and the principal international standard. Its seven base units include the meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela.
SI scales cleanly through powers of ten. Prefixes such as milli-, centi-, and kilo- make related sizes straightforward: 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters, while 1 centimeter equals 0.01 meter.
US customary units
The United States commonly uses customary units alongside SI. Familiar examples include inches, feet, yards, miles, ounces, pounds, US fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.
Some names overlap with Imperial units but represent different quantities—especially volume—so the system and regional definition matter.
Imperial units
The Imperial system was formally established in Britain in the nineteenth century. Miles, yards, feet, inches, stones, pounds, pints, and gallons remain familiar in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, although SI is used officially for most purposes.
